Why Winter Moving is a Good Idea

It should come as no surprise that a lot fewer people tend to be moving during the winter. This makes it easier for you to be able to book a moving company for your move. Oftentimes you’ll also find that winter moving is a lot less expensive than moving throughout the summertime. There are also little things that oftentimes get overlooked like securing an elevator in your building. All these things can make it much easier for you to move. Sometimes winter moving can be a bit tricky. However, if you take the time to plan, your move can be easier than you’d think. With this in mind, here are a few of the considerations you should make when you plan on moving during the winter:

• Be flexible: Unfortunately, the winter weather can be quite unpredictable which means that you must be prepared for anything to happen. It also means that throughout the week leading up to your move you should keep an eye on the weather. If you see that a storm is going to occur on the day you’ve scheduled for your move, then you may need to reschedule your move for another day.
• Be prepared: Regardless of when you’re moving, the day of your move is bound to be rather hectic. This is why you should have everything ready before your winter moving day arrives. Ideally, you should have everything packed and ready to go before your movers even show up. This will save you a lot of time on moving day.
• Prepare your home: When moving during the winter you have to be prepared for it to be raining heavily. If it is, you may want to put up a tarp or tent so that your items stay dry on the way to your moving truck. Putting plastic covers down on your home’s floors will also help to keep things clean when everyone is coming and going, loading things onto the moving truck.
• Keep your items protected: Moving during the winter often means moving in the rain. You can prepare for this by packing your items a bit differently. Instead of using moving boxes with packing tape, consider using plastic totes. Make sure to wrap your artwork in plastic or trash bags to keep the water off of it. Wrap heavy blankets around your wood and fabric furniture and possibly even shrink wrap it in plastic.
• Take extra time: Since the weather may decide not to cooperate with you, it’s important to plan for any unforeseen delays. Heavy rain is bound to cause a delay in your travel time. If nothing else, it’s going to have an impact on the amount of time that it takes you to load up the moving truck. This is why it’s so important to give yourself lots of extra time for moving. After all, isn’t it better to finish earlier than you expected than to have to pay movers for additional time at the end of the move?
